Introduction
The Psychiatry department of Dr. R.P. Govt. Medical College, Kangra at Tanda (HP) caters almost eight district of Himachal Pradesh including patients from the neighbouring states also. The Mental Health services are offered 24x7x365 days in existing inpatient and outpatient settings by the existing single faculty of the department. Within each of these settings services are provided to promote recovery and individual potential with an emphasis on evidence based practices.
The inpatient settings include short hospitalization in existing 10 bed strength with optimum utilization of available vacant beds of neighbouring departments.
The outpatient component includes a wide range of specialized mental health settings, including, but not limited to, Consultation-liaison services, Special Drug De-addiction Clinic on every Tuesday, Tobacco cessation Clinic(TCC) on every Wednesday, Child Guidance Clinic on every Thursday and Psychosexual disorder Clinic on every Saturday. Psychology services ranging from counseling to IQ assessment are also provided.
Some of the most common mental health conditions treated in continuum of care by the Psychiatry department includes:
- Mood disorders, including major depressive disorder
- Substance Use disorders.
- Other anxiety disorders such as panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and specific phobias.
- Serious mental illnesses including bipolar disorder, Schizophrenia and other Psychotic disorders.
- 24 hours Emergencies services.
- Vision of department (short term and long term vision; mission and core values) 1-2 pages.

Facilities
The psychiatry department provides psychological testing, biofeedback, electroconvulsive therapy, counselling and indoor facility available for patients. A Centre of Excellence in mental health is coming up at Dr RPGMC, Tanda which will have more advanced facilities and post graduate courses in Psychiatry and allied branches.
