Introduction
We care for children, and we excel! We are a dynamic and vibrant Department, recognized as state’s leading academic health centre for pediatric specialty education and research. We are a diverse group comprising of academic faculty, clinicians, scientists, researchers, postgraduate trainees, technical and administrative staff united in our common goal of improving the health of all newborns, children and adolescents.
The founding fathers of our Department are Prof. R.K Kaushal ,Late Prof. V.K Sharma and Dr. Sanjeev Chaudhary. Started in year 1997 , we have gone from strength to strength in the ensuing decades, guided by inspiring and visionary faculty, and enriched by brilliant students and scholars. We are amongst the very few Departments in the state to have Pediatric subspecialties of Neonatology, Pulmonology and Pediatric Intensive Care. Our institute is first in the state to have a separate Super-specialty cell of Pediatric Clinical Immunology and Rheumatology. We prepare future leaders in pediatric medicine by offering broad-based training in general pediatrics, critical care and pediatric subspecialties within a variety of ambulatory, emergency and inpatient settings.
During year 2019, the Department provided outpatient consultation to more than 50,000 children and inpatient care to over 6600 children in wards , 813 in Pediatrics ICU and 2600 neonates in NICU/SNCU. Apart from this department of paediatrics has provided health services to 9600 inborn neonates which is the highest number among all medical colleges of the state. The Department is a collaborative group comprising of 10 faculty members, 5 Senior residents, 18 Junior residents, nearly 23 nurses, 6 staff members and over 7 research staff.

Plan For Immediate Five Years
Department of Pediatrics is committed to train medical/paramedical students to improve child health services in the state . As an academic discipline department is committed towards knowledge and skill dissemination through training programs, workshops etc and also generate evidence for new knowledge by carting out various research activities. Though, the permanent mandate of department is to train medical students, in addition department wish to propose following set of activities.
- MCH Centre within two years
- Start of DM/DNB courses in Neonatology, Immunology, Pulmonology & Intensive Care.
- DEIC
- Creation of third unit in Pediatrics
- To develop DRPGMC as a nodal centre for Pediatric Rheumatology and Immunology
- To establish laboratory set up of basic investigations for evaluating Primary Immunodeficiencies (PIDs)
- To sensitize medical graduate trainees regarding PIDs
- To create a local registry for Pediatric Rheumatological Disorders over time

Facilities
- Outpatient services available from 9.30am to 4.00pm. Apart from patient care, daily all UPI as well as additional vaccination are provided to the children & adolescents. Pulmonary Function Test for children at Pediatric Pulmonology Clinic. Various Special Clinics are held.

- Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU): 5 bedded, Level II, ventilation facility.
- Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) : 4 bedded, Level III. Ventilation and other critical care management is provided to neonates. Intermediate Care Nursery (ICN): 16 bedded
- Kangaroo Mother Unit
- Pediatric Wards: Two units with 30 beds per unit
- Pediatric wards: Two units and a superspecialty cell of Pediatric Clinical Immunology and Rheumatolgy with a total of 60 beds.
- Teaching
- Under Graduate Teaching: 120 undergraduate students are provided teaching as per MCI guidelines & curriculum. Assigned lectures and clinical case demonstrations, seminars are conducted regularly.
- Quiz: The department organizes pediatric quiz for undergraduates’ students to popularize the subject & to participate in national competition.
- Projects: The department encourages undergraduates’ students to take up short-term research projects during their vacations.
- Post Graduate Teaching: MD candidates 6seats
Interns & Junior Residents are trained in the management of pediatric cases, immunization and other National programmes related to child health. They also participate actively in the academic programme of the department.
