Introduction
Since the inception of the college in 1996, the department of Community Medicine has been at the helm of research activities apart conducting the undergraduate and post graduate teaching programme. The department is located on the 3rd floor of the Para Clinical block. It has a backing of Rural and urban field practice areas, which are responsible for providing community health services to both urban and rural populations of NagrotaBagwan and Shahpur blocks of district Kangra.
Apart from an annual admission of 120 MBBS students, the department has an annual intake of two (02) MD students in Community Medicine since 2010. The Interns are posted for a period of 8 weeks in both urban and rural health training centres during their internship programme.
Apart from undergraduate and postgraduate medical courses, the department is a nodal centre for the Bridge Programme (Certificate) in Community Health for Nurses (BPCCHN) under the aegis of the Indira Gandhi National Open University. The department is a centre for many multi-centric projects in collaboration with the leading institutes and organisations of the country.
“Knowledge forPublic Health Excellence”
Department of Community Medicine has a vision which is both comprehensive and harmonious in nature. We intend to project a standard to attain a standard in teaching, training and research by 2025. Looking back, since inception of the college, department has grown in terms of becoming a permanent recognized body to teach and train the under and post graduate medical students in public health discipline. These medical specialists become a source to serve the patients (Under-gradates) and entire population at large (Post-graduates). Working towards attaining “Health for All” goal, department is committed towards quality assured teaching and training. Medical graduates are trained in primary health care to make such services more accessible and affordable. Such level of training makes graduates well worse with implementation level issues and in turn to seek solution therein. Ongoing addition of knowledge needs to be accessed from various sources so that it can be well communicated to graduates. Such level of continuous and sustained knowledge enrichment has become important these days. It has become vital for faculty members to first update oneself about current level of valid knowledge, and then disseminate to further use. Searching for knowledge practicing current level of technology like internet, lacks documented and authenticated effort. Capacities building of faculty members in various sub-specialties of public health like Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Health Management, Family Medicine and Social Sciences are required to set up these discipline for their application.
Setting up of a required limit by Medical Council of India (MCI) in terms of minimum requirement shall not be looked as point of satisfaction. It should rather to be considered such a point form where road to excellence begins. Striding in race for excellence certainly serve the patient and population by getting quality product of national and international repute. Such a level cannot be attained without setting standards for teaching and training. Regular update for theories and applications of public health discipline is required through master level training courses in country and abroad. Thereafter, sub-disciplines shall be established for teaching, training, and consultancy practices. Apart from routine book based and MCI scheduled teaching, department of Community Medicine is forecasting itself as a “consultancy node” for technical assistance to health care delivery system further to shape the health care strategies based on recollecting/generating research based evidence. This node certainly shall bring an interface between policy makers, program officers and public health experts. This kind power mix of evidence based knowledge, decision making, and public health practice build a supportive environment for effective health care strategies. This indeed shall create a real time opportunity to medical graduates to practice public health principles.
A state of art “consultancy” service shall be considered as a measured output for people at large for department of Community Medicine. Generated public health schemes in the form of health programs and their strategies will ultimately benefit the people at large in order to reduce disease burden, remove risk factors for diseases and improve their health. Stating this is just not enough, it requires a mammoth effort to upscale the level of knowledge and technical expertise, which is of international standards. For department of Community Medicine, a sustained international level interface needs to be created for knowledge and skills acculturation. This helps to understand the extent of public health practices and skills like for Epidemiology and Biostatistics, social sciences, health management, and family medicine. Usually department become self aware of them by accessing information itself in a medium of research journals, with the limited opportunity to practice such information. The interface brings an opportunity of personal interaction that enables us to practice such principles.
