Introduction

Department of Immunohaematology and Blood transfusion (also referred to as Transfusion Medicine) was recognised as a full fledged independent department from auspicious Chaitra Navratra 2025.Priorly ,it was functioning as  Blood Bank, which was established in DRPGMC in the year 2007.Currently the department is running under the expert guidance of Associate Professor and Head of Department Dr Anjali Shrikant Chavan, Transfusion Medicine Specialist , ably assisted by deputed medical officers, qualified and experienced staff nurses and lab technicians who are working round the clock to provide expert and quality services to the patient population.
 
 
 
Immunohaematology and Blood Transfusion is a multi –faceted discipline having multiple interfaces viz:
 
1. Community interface -Understanding the community ,formulating appropriate donor recruitment ,collection of blood from healthy voluntary donors ,creating awareness regarding blood donations and its benefits
 
2. Laboratory interface-Red cell and platelet serology ,Testing for Transfusion transmitted infections of donor blood
 
3. Clinical interface -Provision of adequate and safe blood  and blood components to cater patient needs ,suspected adverse transfusion reaction workup ,Apheresis, educating staff of consumer departments on bed side transfusion practices
 
4. Manufacturing interface -Blood component preparation in the Blood component separation unit(BCSU) of the department
 
5. Quality management system -Participation in internal and external quality management programs
 
 
 
Transfusion medicine plays a pivotal role in the field of medical science and has assumed great significance in modern health care system.
